A spaceship commanded by J. J. Adams (Leslie Nielsen) is sent to Altair IV to check on a lost farm colony ship. The sole survivor of the original expedition-linguist Dr. Edward Morbius (Walter Pidgeon)-contacts the Altair IV and warns the crew to stay away. Something has killed everyone else in the expedition and Morbius says he cannot protect Adams and his crew. Adams refuses to listen and his ship lands, meeting Morbius's amazing robot assistant Robby the Robot, see his advanced living quarters and his many creations, advanced far beyond current science. Morbius is not alone-he has a beautiful young daughter, Alta (Anne Francis). The Altair begins receiving nightly visits from an invisible creature, which first destroys vital equipment, then moves on to attacking the men themselves.
